Respite weekends

Short-Term Respite (STA)

A weekend of respite gives you a proper breather and gives your son or daughter their first nights away from home, with a small group they already know and staff they already trust. Two good things at once, and neither one feels like a leap.

What a respite weekend looks like

A respite weekend is a small group, up to around nine, staying together in a rented house rather than a facility. Everyone already knows each other from the programs, so it feels like a weekend away with mates, not a placement with strangers. There are meals to cook together, outings through the day, and the ordinary rhythm of a house in the evening.

The staff on the weekend are the same people your son or daughter sees each week. Nothing about it starts from scratch.

More than a break, a first step toward independence

A weekend of respite gives you time back, and that matters on its own. But the quieter thing it does is bigger. For a lot of young adults these are the first nights they have ever spent away from home, and doing that with a familiar group and trusted staff takes the fear out of it.

Cooking together, sharing a house, sorting out an evening, getting through a night away and finding it went fine. That is where readiness for independent living quietly starts to grow.

Who it suits

Respite weekends suit young adults who are already part of the programs and are ready to try nights away in good company. Because the group already knows each other, it works best as a next step rather than a first contact. Families who want a genuine break, and a gentle way to test independence, tend to find it meets both needs at once.

How it fits the pathway

Respite sits in the middle of one sequenced pathway held by the same team. Most families meet us through Weekend Warriors and our social programs. Over time a social program becomes a weekend away, and for some, a run of good weekends away becomes the confidence to look at a home of their own. Nobody has to switch providers or start again with new faces when the next step comes.
